An exclusive food night to defeat food waste in Germany!

On 29 September 2011, the German waste management company, AVL, held the "Nacht der Lebensmittel" (a “food night”) as part of the GreenCook project. From a meal to a film screening, with a discussion in between, the evening was entirely dedicated to the fight against waste and respect for food.

The food night began with a meal made with waste food. The head chef, Wam Kat, whose ambition is to improve food habits on a global scale, prepared a meal for the hundreds of guests using fruit and vegetables that could no longer be sold because they had visible imperfections while remaining perfectly edible. The meal was greatly appreciated by all… a delicious way to kick off the evening!

More respect for food

The guests then attended a meeting-debate in which the speakers were: Dr. Utz Remlinger (head of AVL), Josef Kreuzberger (from the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of the Environment, head of waste treatment department), Annette Ponton (initiator of the AVL GreenCook project), Valentin Thurn (director) and Jochen Brühl (manager of LudwigsTafel e.V.). On the table for discussion? The destruction of foodstuffs in the agricultural, industrial and commercial sector, the behaviour of households and political initiatives for a more conscious approach to food.

No to waste!

The evening ended with the screening of the film Taste the Waste in collaboration with Kinokult Programmkinos. In this documentary, Valentin Thurn shows the causes and excesses linked to the deterioration of food. In Germany alone, 20 million tonnes of food that is still fit to eat lands in the dustbin every year! This film could leave nobody unaffected… After attending this evening, many Ludwigsburg residents will think twice before throwing away a slightly discoloured piece of fruit or a lump of bread that is a bit dry.
